Our engineers were recently called to an urgent drainage issue in Southbourne, Bournemouth. The customer had reported ongoing issues with slow drainage, gurgling sounds, and wastewater backing up β classic signs of a blocked interceptor trap, also known as a Buchan trap.
These older traps, while originally designed to prevent sewer gases from entering homes, are now notorious for causing stubborn blockages and access problems.
π οΈ Step 1: High-Pressure Jetting to Clear the Blockage
Upon arrival, our team carried out an immediate CCTV inspection to confirm the issue. As suspected, the drain interceptor trap was heavily blocked with waste build-up, debris, and sediment β restricting flow and causing a backup.
We used high-pressure water jetting to:
- Break down stubborn waste material
- Clear the internal chamber
- Restore temporary flow for the property
This initial cleanout helped avoid immediate flooding and allowed the customer to regain partial use of their system.
π Step 2: Planned Removal of the Interceptor Trap
While jetting offered a short-term fix, the customer opted for a permanent solution. We scheduled a return visit to remove the outdated interceptor trap entirely and reconnect the pipework with modern fittings.
Why remove the trap?
- Interceptor traps are prone to blocking and silting up
- They limit access for cleaning and camera inspections
- In most modern systems, they are no longer needed and can safely be removed
We excavated the area, removed the Buchan trap, and installed a straight-through section of 110mm PVC pipe with an inspection chamber for future access.
β The Result: Restored Flow & Long-Term Peace of Mind
With the drain interceptor trap removed, the customer now benefits from:
- Unrestricted drainage flow
- Full access for future maintenance or inspections
- Fewer risks of unexpected blockages
At Bournemouth Drains24, we always recommend upgrading outdated drainage components to modern alternatives wherever possible β especially when dealing with repeat blockages.
